I've had the pleasure of working at my job for the past 26 years. When I first arrived I quickly realized that I needed to step up my wardrobe and go out and buy some suits! Even wearing cheap suits was better than plain old "street clothes". We are lucky now that we have business casual everyday, not just on Fridays. But to your point about being open to construtive criticism, I think having a mentor is the best way to accomplish this. A mentor can give you advice in a way that will be very encouraging and not taken personally. You know how emotional we can get sometimes when we think people are trying to hurt our feelings - having a mentor removes that from the equation.
